Many of you may already know New-Zealand born Head Chef, Amber Doig who over the past year has brought her skill & Ibero-American flair to The Butler & it’s delicious menu. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we wanted to introduce to you her mother. Over the past few months, Amber’s mum has joined her in The Butler kitchen to become the dynamic duo!
They can ‘handle the heat’ in the kitchen.
We sat down and asked Amber a few questions about working together at The Butler & their plans this Mother’s Day.
Are there any skills you learnt from your mum growing up that have helped you in the kitchen today? Any home secrets you’d like to share?
The main things I learnt from my Mum in regards to being a chef would be cleanliness, speed, the importance of a sharp knife and how to actually sharpen one! All these little tips have definitely helped me throughout my career.
What are some of the best things about working together at The Butler?
The best thing about working together is I know things will be done the way I want when I show her once. And the whole role reversal of being “The Boss” even if it’s just for a few hours a day haha.
Favourite dish you cook together at home and/or growing up?
We were all about simplicity but we did a lot of baking growing up. Everything from biscuits, slices and puddings. Oh, as well as a mean Spaghetti Bolognese.
Any Butler dishes your mum has added her special touch to?
There isn’t a dish in particular with an element that is hers but she has brought precision and meticulousness to the kitchen and in anything she does.
Any special plans this Mother’s Day?
We will both be serving lunch to the public at The Butler on Mother’s Day, BUT I will make sure she wakes up to a little something special.
Next time your at The Butler, be sure to say hi to the fabulous pair!
